HAMDEN — More than 3 years ago, a Hamden woman was mauled by two rottweilers while defending her young granddaughter. Cynthia Reed spent two days in the hospital after the October 2012 attack, and the dogs were set to be euthanized.
But the dogs’ owner, Kim Miller, says there is more to the story. Since 2012, Kato and Kleo have been on “death row” as Miller continues to appeal their death sentence.
Over the last few weeks, dozens of people have reached out to FOX 61, asking for updates on this case. The Connecticut Department of Agriculture said they are not commenting publicly on the case, because it is now in the hands of the courts. FOX 61 has reached out to Miller’s attorney and has not heard back.
At the time, police said the dogs got out and came after Reed’s 6-year-old granddaughter. When she stepped in, one of the dogs grabbed her by the back of the neck. That’s when other neighbors and witnesses jumped in and hit the dogs with a baseball bat until they let go.
A Facebook page in support of the dogs, Free Kato and Kleo, tells a different version of the story. A post on the page says:
The gate opened and [Miller] ran after her beloved dogs. Kato and Kleo stopped at the end of the street and were immediately surrounded by a crowd of people who began beating both dogs. A human was bitten in the frenzy and both dogs required medical attention with Kato spending two weeks in the hospital.
When FOX 61 first reported the story in 2012, Miller did not have a comment. Hamden Police charged her with two counts of allowing an animal to roam, and four counts of animal nuisance.
