Emergency crews around the state were working on clearing downed trees and restoring power after a line of thunderstorms brought damaging high winds to the state.
Winds up to hurricane force swept through the state overnight. Thunderstorms went through between midnight and 4 a.m.
Around 5 a.m. nearly the entire towns of Woodstock and Eastford were without power.
According to Eversource, at around noon 50,000 customers were without power throughout the state.
An Eversource spokesman said crews will be busy for most of the day repairing poles and wires. Some areas in the state have not been responded to because of the overwhelming amount of calls. Crews responded to 1,165 locations in their coverage area.
In Berlin, crews put out a brush fire that may have been caused by downed wires on Chamberlin Highway near Vineyard Road.
Webster Court just off the Berlin Turnpike in Newington was closed for several hours while crews cleaned up a tree that fell across the road. The tree clipped power lines knocking out electricity in the area.
Contractors for EverSource spent hours getting the road passable and restoring power to thousands of homes in the Newington, Berlin and Rocky Hill areas.
According to the Manchester Fire Department, primary and secondary power lines came down in the area of 44 New Bolton Road near the Bolton town line. Officials said the road will be shut down for a while. In East Hartford, power was out on Connecticut Boulevard near Prospect Street.
A tree feel on a house shortly after 1 a.m. on 52 Crestdale Road in Glastonbury, puncturing a hole in the roof. Another tree damaged a home in Vernon on Franklin Street.
It was a close call for a family in West Hartford when a giant tree went straight into their house Wednesday night at about 11:30 p.m. The house is on the corner of Boulevard and Garfield Rd and luckily the family inside made it out okay and there were no injuries reported. Neighbors said they are lucky more damage wasn’t done. Boulevard is closed in the area.
Several flights were cancelled at Bradley International.
Roads around the state were closed in the wake of the storm.
In Ashford, Route 74 by Upton Road was closed due to a tree and wires down.
In Bethel, Route 58 at Route 302 is closed until further notice. A large tree and wires are blocking the road. Police said to use Wolfpits Road for the detour.
In Plainfield, Rt. 101 by Dog Hill Road was closed due to wires and trees in the road.
In South Windsor, power was knocked out to a sewer pump station and caused Ellington Road near Pierce Road to be closed. Also Niederwerfer Road at the East Windsor town line was closed. Those roads have reopened.
In Stafford, Route 19 was closed by the Massachusetts state line.
In Winchester, Route 263 by Blue St Road was closed due to wired in the roadway.
