Southington police investigating pipe bomb

SOUTHINGTON — Police are investigating a pipe bomb found by a hiker on Sunday.

The hiker found the bomb in the woods near Crescent Lake around 3 p.m.

The hiker had moved the object from it’s original location the woods, according to police. They described the object being an eight inch long, black metal tube, and about two to three inches in diameter with a small hole drilled in the base with one end covered in what appeared to be a large amount of duct tape. Officials said that it looked like it had been previously detonated.

The State Police bomb squad determined that the device had been detonated as much as a year ago.

Police said that anyone who finds a suspicious object should not touch it and leave it in place.
