HAMDEN--On Tuesday night, more than 30 Quinnipiac University students shaved their heads to raise money for the Saint Baldrick’s Foundation, which funds childhood cancer research. The school expects to raise more than $7,500 from the foundation.

Sophomore Chewy Patel participated because he has loved ones who were affected by cancer.

"My best friend had cancer when he was in high school and we thought he was all finished up with it and everything, all fully treated, a sigh of relief for us, but his mother then we figured out had ovarian cancer," said Patel, who upset to have his head shaved but was willing to do so for a good cause. "I love my hair more than anything in the world. I don't like when people even touch my hair."

Many of the other 30 students were too motivated by how cancer has touched their own lives.

"I also had a friend in high school who died just two years ago, right after he finished his first year of college," said Quinnipiac student and event organizer Danelle Huntington. "And he had gone through cancer remission back and forth, and cancer finally won last year."

The fundraiser even drew support from outside the university. Angela Adams, of East Haven, read about the Saint Baldrick’s fundraiser online.

"I just felt like it was a good cause, and I put it out there at work and everybody donated," said Adams.

To date, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation has raised more than $170 million in research grants across 26 countries.
