ENFIELD — The fight against the heroin epidemic continues in the north and central part of the state. Tuesday morning an opioid addiction task force will meet for the first time in Enfield.

Convening at town hall, the North Central Opioid Addiction Task Force will be joined by the state’s Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Commissioner, Miriam Delphin-Rittmon, to get a handle on the use of heroin.

The groups are teaming up with doctors to combat the crisis in targeted areas, specifically, East Windsor, Ellington, Enfield, Somers, Suffield, Windsor and Windsor Locks.  Leaders from those seven towns will come together at this first regional meeting and invite speakers to learn about the best practices to address addiction going forward.

According to the Hartford Courant, last year Enfield emergency responders reported 12 opioid deaths and gave narcan to 46 people. As of March so far, one person had died from an overdose and narcan has been given out 4 times already.

The group will meet monthly through June and today’s meeting of the first task force starts at 10 a.m.at Town Hall Council Chambers, 820 Enfield Street, Enfield.
