HARTFORD – Former UConn running back and NFL first-round draft pick Donald Brown has signed with the New England Patriots, according to FoxSports.com.

Brown was a first-round pick, the 27th pick overall, of the Indianapolis Colts in 2009.

The 28-year-old, Red Bank, NJ native  is an 7-year NFL veteran, playing the first five seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and the last two seasons with the San Diego Chargers.

He rushed for almost 3,000 yards and 18 touchdowns, averaging just over 4 yards per carry. He also caught 120 passes for just over 1,000 yards and two TDs.

Brown joins Brandon Bolden, Dion Lewis, James White, Tyler Gaffney and fullback James Develin in a Patriots backfield that will most certainly be looking to add additional pieces before training camp, according to patriots.com. The team previously met with restricted free agent Benny Cunningham and veteran free agent James Starks but Brown represents the only signing. Free agent LeGarrette Blount has expressed interest in returning to the team.
