BLOOMFIELD--Plans for a water bottling plant in Bloomfield aren't down the drain, but they did suffer a setback.

The state Planning and Development Committee passed a bill which, if approved by the General Assembly, would eliminate a wholesale discount rate for a water bottling company.

A discounted rate was expected to save Niagara Water around $2 million per year.

Even though the Metropolitan District Commission claims there is plenty of water to go around, Niagara has been facing stiff opposition to its plant with concerns about water levels.

"In case you haven't noticed, it's kind of hard to predict the weather these days so we don't know what's going to be happening in the future," Donna Landerman, of Save Our Connecticut Water, said.  "I don't think we should gamble on it."

A Niagara spokesman told FOX 61 the water supply is not the real issue. Opponents are really just against plastic bottles.

The company said the plant, at full operation, would flow with 120 full-time jobs with benefits.
