HARTFORD — Two victims have been identified after they were fatally shot in the city’s north end early Saturday.

Two Hartford men were sitting in a car beside 18 Martin Street at about 2 a.m. when an unknown suspect approached and fired into their vehicle. Several bullets ripped through the vehicle, causing critical injuries to both occupants.

Responding EMS teams rushed to transport both victims to Saint Francis Hospital, where emergency room doctors pronounced them deceased a short time later.

Jeffery Vail, 28, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso, while his companion, William Ward, 33, was hit with a single bullet to the chest. Both men were residents of Hartford.

The ShotSpotter system first alerted Hartford Police to approximately thirteen gunshots being fired in the area. Several units then responded and established a crime scene in front of the Martin Street property.

A perimeter check in hopes of locating a suspect proved unsuccessful, however police say they are following several leads. At this time, no persons of interest have been identified.

Detectives with the Major Crimes Division are handling the investigation and aggressively searching for those responsible for the deaths.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. Anyone with helpful information may report it anonymously to Sgt. Reggie Early at (860) 757-4248.
