WESTWOOD, Mass. -- The East Street Bridge is well-known to people in the small town of Westwood, but apparently it’s not well known to other drivers. That’s because cars and trucks slam into the low-lying bridge frequently, and yet, it keeps happening.

Wednesday, it happened again. Around 3 p.m. a car caught the curb just where the road narrows under the bridge, ricocheted to the other side of the road and slammed into another car.

We last reported a crash in August. A food distribution truck rammed into the bridge, bursting into pieces. The Boston Globe reported another bad crash in June.

Police in Westwood tell The Globe one of the most memorable crashes was dubbed “Lobsterpocalypse” over a year ago. The truck was carrying $100,000 worth of lobsters, smashed into the bridge, and caught fire.

The bridge is owned by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. Officers say they are called for crashes there about once a month.

Town officials say construction is starting in 2017 to widen it and raise it to 13’6’’ but it won’t be done until 2018.
