HARTFORD--Inmates in Hartford are getting a greater say in the community, thanks to an organization called Hartford Decide$.
The organization set up a pop-up voting location at the Hartford Correctional Center so that inmates who live in the capital city can weigh in on how the city's money is used. The goal is to keep them involved so that their families benefit from the projects being decided on.
Linda Bayer, who works with Hartford Decide$, said, "You become disconnected, I think, even if you're only here temporarily before you go to court, and it's important that folks still feel connected to the community so in the long run so their lives are better.
The city of Hartford set aside more than $1 million late last year to fund projects launched on by Hartford Decide$.
Hartford Decides works on projects that improve the city, such as repairing a basketball court in Keeney Park and upgrading public housing community rooms.
