MIDDLETOWN - Police are searching for the person responsible for a fatal hit-and-run crash in Middletown Thursday afternoon.

Around 2:15 p.m. Barbara Eddinger, 61, of Middletown, was at her mailbox on Chamberlain Road when an SUV crossed the center line and hit Eddinger. Then the SUV drove off, according to Middletown Police.

LifeStar was dispatched to the scene and Eddinger was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

"She was a good woman, very kind and caring," Eddinger's relative Carl Hayn said. "It's a terrible thing that happened today."

The SUV is described as dark blue, and it should have damage on the front left. The driver may be a white man with dark hair or a dark hat.

"I'd like to see them catch this guy," Hayn said. "The fact that he just took off like this is actually terrible."

Hayn also lives across the street and said while he can't believe this happened to someone close to him, it doesn't surprise him that tragedy happened here.

"I`m surprised more things don`t happen here," Hayn said. "People race up and down this hill they`re not paying attention, people need to slow down."

The investigation is ongoing by Middletown Police. If you have any information, they ask that you contact them.
