HARTFORD–One of the most popular ice cream spots in Connecticut is undoubtedly the UConn Dairy Bar, where the shakes are fresh and the flavors are plentiful.

Now, for the first time, Bear’s Smokehouse will be offering up some authentic barbecue to eat before–or after, whatever floats your boat–you cool off with a cone this summer.

Jamie “The Bear” McDonald, the co-owner of the hot BBQ joint, has signed a contract to sell ice cream from the Dairy Bar at his two locations in Hartford and Windsor. This is the very first time an outside vendor has been permitted to sell the UConn delicacies.

“We are excited to be the first restaurant to be able to sell this locally-produced cow-to-cone product,” McDonald said in a statement.

The UConn Dairy Bar opened in 1953 to sell products made by the local creamery, and the ice cream is still made from on-site milk.

Bear’s also recently became a partner of the Yard Goats, and will have stands at the new Downtown North Dunkin’ Donuts Stadium, as well at Hartford’s Union Station.

Also this summer, Bear’s is expanding its franchise with a new joint venture with Millwright’s Restaurant. The combined spot, called The Cook and the Bear, will open in West Hartford’s Blue Back Square this summer.
