MIDDLETOWN - Police are continuing to search for the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run crash in Middletown.

Middletown Police said that at around 2:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon, Barbara Eddinger, 61, of Middletown, was at her mailbox on Chamberlain Road when an SUV driving east crossed the center line and hit her. The SUV drove off.

LifeStar was dispatched to the scene and Eddinger was taken to the Middlesex Hospital, where she died.

"She was a good woman, very kind and caring," Carl Hayn, who was related to her, said. "It's a terrible thing that happened today."

The late-model midsize SUV is described as two-tone: dark blue or black on the lower half and a lighter color by the roof line. It should have damage on the driver's side front-end. The driver may be a white man with dark hair or a dark hat.

"I'd like to see them catch this guy," Hayn said. "The fact that he just took off like this is actually terrible."

Hayn also lives across the street and said while he can't believe this happened to someone close to him, it doesn't surprise him that tragedy happened here.

"I`m surprised more things don`t happen here," Hayn said. "People race up and down this hill. They are not paying attention, people need to slow down."

The investigation is ongoing. If you have any information, Middletown Police ask that you contact them at 860-638-4060.
