BRANFORD — A Branford man is facing several charges after police say he assaulted his girlfriend and then 2 officers and a police K9.

Police were called to the Branford Motel around 9 p.m. Saturday for a domestic dispute involving Louis Ortiz, 38, and his girlfriend. When police arrived, Officers Jay Kaufman, Mathew Clerkin, Luigi Amasino, and his K9 partner, Joker, found Ortiz at the motel.

As Officer Kaufman tried to take Ortiz into custody, he became combative and non-compliant with officers commands, police said. Ortiz lunged at K9 Joker and tried to choke him and fought with the officers.

Police said Officer’s Amasino, Clerkin and Joker were all injured during the altercation. The officers were treated at the hospital and released with minor injuries. Officer Amasino reported that Joker didn’t require medical attention.

Ortiz was charged with breach of peace, assault, two counts of threatening, interfering with officer, cruelty to animals, and assault on officer. He was held on a $10,000 bond and was arraigned in New Haven Court Monday morning.
