STRATFORD – A Stratford woman was arrested and charged with trying to illegally claim more than $66,000 that her late husband had left to his first wife and the son the man had with that woman.

Valerie Calyton-Jamison, 56, of Stratford, was arrested Thursday and charged with one count of first-degree attempt to commit larceny and one count of second-degree forgery.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Clayton-Jamison sought to claim the proceeds of an annuity that was owned by her late husband and turned over to the Unclaimed Property section of the State Treasurer’s Office as abandoned.

Clayton-Jamison submitted falsified documents claiming to be the beneficiary of the annuity when, in fact, her late husband, Michael Jamison, had named his first wife as beneficiary and the son he had with the first wife as contingent beneficiary, the warrant states.

The annuity, worth $66,713.19, was turned over to the unclaimed property section after unsuccessful efforts to locate the beneficiaries following Jamison’s death in 2008. The Treasurer’s Office holds such unclaimed funds while efforts are made to locate the rightful owners.

Clayton-Jamison was released on bail and is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on Monday, April 18.

First-degree attempt to commit larceny is a felony punishable by not less than one year nor more than 20 years in prison, and a fine up to $15,000. Second-degree forgery is a felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a fine up to $5,000.
