HARTFORD--Trump came, and he left.

Thousands gathered in Hartford on Friday to both to support and protest Donald Trump. The presidential candidate made a campaign stop at the Hartford Convention Center about a week and a half before Connecticut holds its primary elections.

If you missed his speech you can find the full 35 minutes here.

According to Hartford Police Deputy Chief Brian Foley, between 6,000 and 7,000 people were admitted inside the Convention Center before the doors were closed. The room holds about 8,000 people, and Foley said about 1,000 people were left outside.

Hundreds were also outside the Center protesting. Around 3:30 p.m. the first protester sign showed up, and the first protester was quickly joined by several others. Hundreds were still there five hours later when the speech ended and the crowds started filing out.

The very first person in line showed up at 8 a.m., and as early as 2:30 lines began to snake around the corner as people waiting for doors to open to the Convention Center. The Center wasn't supposed to open until 4, but people were allowed in as early as 3.

Despite the number of people who showed up, everything went smoothly as people were screened and admitted into the ballroom, and only six hecklers were ejected from the venue. No arrests were made, and the protests all remained peaceful.

Sources say the ramped up security to keep things calm will cost about $40,000 to $50,000, but it's not yet clear who will foot that bill.

People were also selling Trump souvenirs to those waiting in line.

And the protests didn't stop after the event. People argued as they left the building, but  there was no violence and no one was arrested.

Stay tuned with FOX 61. We will have several reporters both inside the rally and outside with protesters all night documenting the event.
