NEW BRITAIN — Crews spent hours on scene after a crane accident in New Britain that knocked out power to thousands of people. A basket crane fell into power lines in the area of 211 Farmington Avenue between Biruta and Allen streets Thursday afternoon.

The crane measured just over 40 feet tall and the accident happened at the site of the Crystal Ballroom banquet hall, which is currently building a new facility on the property.

The collapsed crane was leaning against power lines but no one was in immediate danger, since nobody was inside the lift when it fell.

Utility crews from Eversource first shut off power so they could work on removing the crane.

Farmington Road was closed only in the area impacted by the accident.

Eversource reported just over 2,000 outages in the neighborhood as a result of the accident when it happened, but all power has been restored.
