New Haven man arrested for trying to bring deadly martial arts weapons on plane

EAST ELMHURST, NY — A Connecticut man was arrested on weapons charges after he was stopped by Transportation Security Administration officers at a LaGuardia Airport checkpoint on Saturday, May 7.  Officials say Ramon Crus, of New Haven  was carrying a dagger and several deadly martial arts weapons, including three throwing knives, a traditional throwing star and an expandable throwing star.

TSA officers detected the weapons among Crus’s carry-on items as he was entering a TSA checkpoint, officials said in a statement Monday.

TSA officers immediately contacted the Port Authority Police, which responded and confiscated the weapons and arrested Crus. There was no impact to airport operations, officials said.

“This incident serves as a reminder that passengers are responsible for the contents of bags they bring to the security checkpoint,” said Lisa Ferbstein, Office of Public Affairs for TSA.  “TSA’s advice to passengers is to look through bags thoroughly before coming to the airport to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items.”
