OXFORD -- As we approach the warmer months, many of us will be spending lots of time outdoors. But with that comes the risk of skin cancer. So what can you do to protect yourself?

Richard Kaminski of Oxford is a skin cancer survivor. In 1998, he was diagnosed with Stage 1 melanoma, and in 2009 he went back to the doctor and was diagnosed with Stage 4, the worst.

Chemotherapy didn't work, but clinical trials in New York did. Years later, he is a survivor and a grandfather. He says it is okay to be outside, but you need to always remember sunscreen and lip balm and wear a hat.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 10,100 people will die of melanoma this year. While melanoma accounts for less than 1% of skin cancer cases, it causes the most deaths. That's why during May, skin cancer awareness month, doctors and survivors urge people not take any chances.
