SIMSBURY–A 63-year-old man was injured while hiking at Talcott Mountain Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the man, who was hiking alone, was near the top, near Heublein Tower, when he was trying to scale some shale cliffs and fell. He was about 50 feet up and fell halfway down, hitting a tree.

The victim was knocked unconscious and had severe cuts on his head. Other hikers on the trail, including recent medical school graduates, came to the man’s aid while waiting for officials to arrive.

Simsbury Police and DEEP’s Environmental Conservation Police responded to rescue him. By the time the EnCon officers arrived around 4 p.m. the man had regained consciousness.

The man was taken to Hartford Hospital by LifeStar.

He is expected to make a full recovery.
