HARTFORD - "To protect and serve" took on a whole new meaning over the weekend for the Hartford Police Department after a fawn was found on the highway.

Hartford Police Deputy Chief Brian Foley tweeted a series of pictures Monday morning of Hartford officers caring for a small fawn that had been found on the highway near its mother. The mother deer had been struck by a car.

The fawn had been found by a resident and brought to police headquarters. The woman, who lives in Hartford, said her father found the fawn laying next to the mother, which got struck and killed on Route 15.

Seemingly every officer on duty Sunday wanted to get a photo with the tiny deer.

"What cop isn't going to want to care for that fawn?" Foley said. "The thing is pretty cute. How do you not look at that, and think it's pretty cute, you know?"

Hartford Police cared for the fawn until the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection arrived to transfer it to a state recognized wildlife rescue.

The DEEP recommends in most cases leaving animals alone if found in the wild if it's unclear if the parent is nearby.
