HARTFORD — Connecticut beach-goers won't have to fish around for change this holiday weekend to pay sales tax on parking at state and local parks and beaches.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy on Friday signed legislation that immediately ends the tax on parking fees for seasonal lots with 30 or more spaces and municipally owned lots with 30 or more spaces.
Last year, lawmakers passed legislation that lifted the long-standing tax exemption for seasonal lots. The change surprised the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, which charges for parking at 25 state parks, as well as municipalities that had to scramble to determine the best way to collect the 6.35 percent levy.
This measure reverses that decision.
Betsy Gara, executive director of the Council of Small Towns, says the tax "created a lot of confusion and headaches."
