STONINGTON –A Stonington man who was critically injured after being hit by a car while on his motorized scooter has died from his injuries.

Around 10 a.m. Wednesday morning Ray Lanphere, 77, was crossing Broad Street (Route 1) near the intersection of South Broad Street and Mayflower Ave in his motorized scooter, which he used because he only had one leg, when he was hit.

The victim was taken to a Rhode Island hospital, where he died Thursday around 7 p.m. according to Stonington Police Captain Todd Olson.

Police say there is currently no evidence of wrongdoing by the driver, and don’t expect this to become a criminal investigation, though the initial investigation is still underway.

Ray’s brother, Ken Lanphere, told FOX 61 that he had never really worried about his brother’s safety before.

“He stays on all the sidewalks. The only place he crosses is certain streets,” said Ken.

The Lanphere brothers both lived in the Edythe K. Richmond Homes, a 60-unit housing complex for the elderly and disabled.
