NEW HAVEN — Police in New Haven are investigating a shooting that injured two people early Friday morning outside of a supermarket.

Just after 12:30 a.m., officers were called to Whalley Avenue between Dwight and Orchard Streets. The city’s gunfire detection system, called Shot Spotter, reported numerous gunshots.

Officers found Marquis Freeman, 20, from New Haven had been shot in the head and the buttocks. He was rushed to Yale – New Haven Hospital, where he remains in grave condition, police said.

Terrance Lee, 25, had been shot in the hand. He was able to run to the Stop and Shop across the parking lot and asked for help.

Lee told investigators they were walking on Whalley Avenue at Sperry Street when they spotted a young man walking toward them. He said they greeted him and he started shooting.

Police did not provide a description of the shooter.

Detectives ask anyone with information to call police at 203-946-6304. Calls may be made anonymously.
