SCOTLAND, Conn.--A family is in mourning after their dog was tragically killed, but they are hoping that it serves as a reminder to take it slow on the roads.

Niccoletta Gifford's German Shepherd, Baron, was killed in a hit-and-run car crash earlier this week. The dog was nearby her home when he was killed.

Gifford says that the car hit Baron, the driver turned off the car's headlights and sped off, something that isn't uncommon in the area.

Gifford says there's too much speeding in town, and she wants to try and change that.

"Don't treat this road like a highway," Gifford said.

She wasn't able to tell what type of car hit Baron, but she noticed it had a very loud exhaust.
