WEST HAVEN -- A special delivery from five decades ago has a West Haven couple in shock, wanting to know more about where it has been all these years.

In Joan and Ed Quirk’s mailbox, about a week ago, was a postcard dated June, 1963.

“When we realized what this was, we were kind of aghast,” Ed said. “Wow.”

The card was written to Ed, from his aunt, and it was supposed to arrive at his parent's West Haven house years ago, but it never did.

Ed’s aunt Francis who wrote the letter has passed, so seeing this letter brings back old memories.

“My aunt Francis had traveled to Cape Cod with her daughter Susan,” he said. “This is what we did back in the 60s. When we went, we sent a postcard.”

Decades later, it arrived in his mailbox, thanks to a postal worker, Tom from West Paris, Maine.

Tom wrapped the postcard around a letter to the postmaster in West Haven, asking him to deliver it to the Quirks.

The couple believes it says a lot about human nature that Tom took the time to find them, and mail the letter to them.

“I called Tom the next day in Maine and thanked him for everything that he did in making sure that this arrived safely, for taking that extra effort,” Ed said.

Questions still linger for the couple.

“Where has it been?” Ed said. “This was lost somewhere. We don’t know if this was lost on the Cape, stuck in a bag somewhere or in a machine.”

While the couple may never find out how or why it got stuck in the past, they believe it is going to be a special piece of the future.

“When we go see his cousin Susan, who knows what she is going to remember that maybe she has forgotten to tell us,” Joan said. “It may open a door we haven`t been through.”
