NEW HAVEN — A former Ansonia resident has been sentenced to prison for importing and distributing the party drug Molly.

Waheed Islam was sentenced Monday to nine years behind bars followed by three years of probation.

Islam pleaded guilty March 3 to conspiracy to import a controlled substance into the United States.

Police began investigating Islam in May 2014 after receiving a tip that he was making and distributing the drug, also known as MDMA.

Authorities learned in July 2014 that the 48-year-old Islam was receiving packages from China that were labeled as containing “rock sugar.”

The following month, federal officials intercepted one such package addressed to Islam at New York’s JFK International Airport. They discovered inside substances used to make MDMA. Subsequent packages were found to contain the same substance.

Islam was previously convicted in 2011 for illegally buying and owning body armor. He was sentenced to 18 months in federal court, and was on supervised release when caught in the Molly crimes.
