HARTFORD-- Crews are cleaning up after an apartment fire that displaced 60 residents Monday night.
The fire, in a four-story building at 270 Laurel St., started around 9 p.m. Monday. Over 50 firefighters were called to the scene. The fire was declared a second-alarm about 10 minutes after it was first reported.
Early Tuesday, repair crews were boarding windows on the building.
According to Chief Reginald Freeman, no one was injured in the fire, but firefighters did have to rescue eight residents with a ladder from the second and third floors. Firefighters did two sweeps of the building to make sure everyone got out safely.
The fire started when a resident fell asleep while cooking on the third floor, but it spread to the fourth, so it's unclear how extensive the damage is and how many people will be able to return to their homes.
