MIDDLETOWN - The first of four baseball state championship games was played Friday night at Palmer Field in Middletown.
The Wolcott Eagles defeated the Northwestern Highlanders 3-2 in dramatic fashion.
The teams would be scoreless in bottom of the fifth inning when Eagle Steven Urbanski changed that in a hurry. He sent a monster high into the stands in right field and got Wolcott on the board 1-0. The game wase tied 1-1 in the top of the seventh when Bryce Ramsey hit a fly ball to shallow center field that drops. Zack Austin running on two outs made it home all the way from second base to give the Highlanders the lead 2-1. Time for the drama: in the bottom of the seventh Raymond Bartoli smacks a two run walk off homer over the left field fence.
The game winner gives the Wolcott Eagles their first state championship in school history.
