ROCKY HILL – Two people were killed after a car crashed into a tree early Sunday morning.

Police said that around 5:15 a.m. a speeding car crossed the center line on Maple Street by the intersection of Gilbert Avenue.

Police said they pulled the driver over on Gilbert Avenue. As the officer approached the car, the driver took off then crashed into a tree on Gilbert Avenue, a short distance away south of Elm Street.

Both occupants were extracted by the Rocky Hill Fire Department. One occupant was pronounced dead at the scene. A LifeStar helicopter was called to the scene to take the other occupant to Hartford Hospital. That occupant died later in the morning from their injuries.

The accident is being reconstructed by the Mid-State Accident Reconstruction Unit and is being investigated by the Rocky Hill Police Department.
