CHESTER - The body of a missing 48-year-old man was recovered from Cedar Lake on Sunday.

The body of Paul Haney of Manchester was found  at around 11:15 a.m. a short distance away from where his canoe capsized the previous evening.

Haney and a female companion had set out on the boat at about 6:45 p.m. Saturday. At approximately 8 p.m. the raft overturned, leaving them stranded in the middle of the lake. A fire official at the scene said it did not appear the man could swim.

The woman, Carol Bremser, 49, of Chester, was spotted and rescued by a passing  good Samaritan vessel shortly after being thrown into the water. She was taken to an area medical clinic for further treatment.

A large-scale recovery operation was initiated by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's Environmental Conservation Police Saturday night, with assistance from local dive teams and a Connecticut State Police sonar boat.

At 9 a.m. Sunday at the Chester lake's boat launch, the search reconvened.

Both the Chester town beach and the beach at YMCA's Camp Hazen were closed during the search effort to prevent interference from swimmers.

DEEP is investigating the circumstances of the incident.
