THOMASTON - State Police have released the identity of the armed man they said refused to stop approaching police and was fatally shot Sunday in Thomaston.

State police spokesperson Trooper Kelly Grant said an officer was dispatched around 7 p.m. to a disturbance at 700 High Street Extension in Thomaston.

She said that upon arrival Thomaston police officers encountered Daniel Reyes, 27, who was armed with a knife. They said that Reyes approached police officers and ignored demands to stop.

The officer shot Reyes who was taken to Waterbury Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. There were no other reported injuries, according to police.

At around 7:15 p.m., the Thomaston Police Department requested the assistance of State Police. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct a post-mortem examination to determine cause and manner of death.

The identity of the officer is pending. Police said this is an active, ongoing investigation.
