GUILFORD — Police in Guilford are warning people to keep their dogs on a leash while hiking after a fawn was injured on a trail at the Timberlands.

“Removing a fawn from the wild is the last thing we want to do,” Guilford Police Animal Shelter posted on their Facebook page Monday evening. “But after consulting with a rehabilitation, it was decided she needed medical attention.”

“It was concluded that her injuries could have been caused by a dog,” the post said. “Following Guilford’s leash laws could have prevented this little one’s pain and fear.”

Officer said they will update the public on the fawn’s condition on their Facebook page.

Many readers asked how they knew it was a dog and not a coyote, bear, mountain lion, or some other wild animal.

Police said the injuries are more consistent with “rough play” and not an “attack” and that a larger, more aggressive animal would have caused a lot more damage.
