HARTFORD -- A firefighter was treated on the scene of a fire in an apartment building on Gillett Street Wednesday morning.

Hartford Police public information officer Dep. Chief Brian Foley said Farmington Avenue was closed from Gillett Street to Forrest Street near the Harriet Beecher Stowe and Mark Twain houses, but it has since reopened.

The Red Cross is helping 12 displaced families, including 15 adults and five kids.

One couple, Raul Irizarry and Jennifer Perezcarasallo, grabbed their 2-week-old baby and knocked on their neighbors' doors before escaping.

"My mom lives on the third floor, so we had to run upstairs because none of the alarms went off," said Jennifer Perezcarasallo, Irizarry's wife.
