MIDDLETOWN -- Two people, including a State Trooper, are in the hospital after an accident on I-91 Monday morning.

The incident happened around 12:30 a.m. on the northbound side of I-91 in Middletown near exit 20 causing a major delay.

State Police said Trooper Garreth Ollivierre, 36,  was sitting inside the cruiser on the side of the highway finishing up a report on a previous accident when the cruiser was hit from behind by a car driven by Joshua Rita, 25, of Meriden. Police said the cruiser's rear facing emergency lights were on. After the impact, Rita's car went across all three lanes of the highway.

Both the Trooper and the driver were rushed to Hartford Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Ollivierre has been released from the hospital.

State Police are looking into why the oncoming vehicle drove straight into an accident scene without changing lanes.

Connecticut has a move-over law that was implemented in 2009 mandating motorists  immediately reduce speed and the driver should move over one lane unless it is unsafe.

No arrest has been made and it hasn't been determined if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident.

State Police are investigating.
