SIMSBURY – Our military members make the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, so a local business owner is giving one soldier something free in return.
Kenny Medina is a husband, a father of two, a detective for the Hartford Police Department, and he is in the Army.
“He is a nurse in a forward surgical team that was recently deployed to Afghanistan,” his wife Brooke Medina said. “Kenny’s a very selfless man, he is always wanting to do for others, he's always wanting to help others.”
She said this is his second deployment, and he will be gone for about a year.
“I hear all the time that people don’t even know that we’re still over there. We’re still there,” she said. “We still have soldiers gone, wives and husbands missing their families every day, kids missing their dads and it’s a huge sacrifice that’s being made for the country.”
When he was deployed his wife said his biggest concern was his family, but a close second was his prized yard, so he hired GT Landscaping, which went above and beyond with an unexpected gesture.
The day after the Dallas police shooting Brooke was feeling down, but that changed when she went to her mailbox. She pulled out the invoice for her landscaping, and on the back of the $140 bill was a letter from Greg Tucker, the company owner.
“I decided there was going to be no charge for taking care of your yard while Kenny is gone,” the letter read, in part.
Tucker decided to take care of the lawn for free until Kenny returns.
“Me mowing the lawn is really nothing at all in comparison to what Kenny and his family are doing,” he said. “It’s just something nice to do for our veterans and Kenny’s also a Hartford Police officer, he’s a nurse, he’s a soldier, and I don’t know what better person you could try to help out.”
Tucker says it doesn’t take much to give to those who give so much to us.
“I get to see my children every day, he doesn't get to do that, it’s just the right thing to do,” he said. “Who knows maybe it will kick start some chain reaction where everybody helps out a veteran, I’m sure there's plenty out there.”
