ENFIELD — A Connecticut state representative has been arrested on a drunken driving charge, more than a year after an arrest on the same charge.

State police pulled over David J. Alexander, an Enfield Democrat, early Saturday on Interstate 84 in West Hartford. A police report says Alexander’s vehicle was crossing into the right shoulder.

He’s scheduled to appear in court July 28 for charges of driving under the influence, failure to carry registration or insurance and failure to drive in the proper lane.

The 35-year-old Alexander was arrested in February 2015 on a DUI charge, as well as a reckless driving charge. At the time, police said an officer saw Alexander stop for a red light at Elm Street and Ella Grasso Turnpike in Windsor Locks, then drive off while the light was still red.

It’s unclear what happened in that case, as there are no records on the state judicial website of a conviction or if the case is still pending.

At that time, he apologized and said he’d seek help to overcome struggles with alcohol. “I take full responsibility for my actions and I am deeply sorry for what has transpired.  I intend to get the necessary help to overcome my struggles with alcohol. I will do all I can to regain the trust of my constituents and redouble my efforts to fight for their priorities in the general assembly,” he said last February.

A spokesman for Democratic House Speaker Brendan Sharkey says Alexander, who was most recently elected to his second term in 2014 to represent Enfield, is being removed from his committee assignments. He says Sharkey is “extremely concerned” and has urged Alexander to get help.
