NEW HAVEN – Police are investigating a pair of shootings that happened Thursday afternoon.

At around 3:30 p.m. Naugatuck Police responded to a domestic dispute on Washington Street involving somebody shooting a gun.

A woman was shot in the back and was taken to the hospital with had what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.

She identified her assailant as her estranged husband, James Michael Batista, 29.

Batista had taken off and State Police were called in to help Naugatuck Police with their investigation.

At around 5:45 p.m., New Haven Police were notified that Naugatuck Police were in New Haven’s Hill North neighborhood looking for Batista after State Police signaled Batista’s cell phone. The signal showed he was in New Haven and his car was spotted  on West Street heading toward Congress Avenue.

When Batista saw the officers, he stopped and the police car crashed into Batista’s car. While seated inside his car, Batista shot himself in the head.

He was taken to Yale–New Haven Hospital, where he remained in critical condition for several hours before succumbing to his injuries Friday afternoon.

Police are investigating the suicide and collision.
