NEW HAVEN — A city man was killed by a single gunshot wound in the back early Saturday.

Officers were dispatched to Kensington Street, between Chapel Street and Edgewood Avenue, at 1:30 a.m. after Shot Spotter alerted law enforcement to a firearm being discharged in the area.

Arriving officers located a shooting victim lying in the street near Kensington Park and determined he was shot once in the back. Paramedics rushed him to Yale-New Haven Hospital in an attempt to save his life, however emergency room doctors pronounced him deceased an hour later.

Police identified the victim as Daryl Wayne Belton, 22, of Garden Street, New Haven.

As of mid-Saturday morning, there have been no witness reports or vehicle descriptions provided that could lead detectives to a potential suspect.

Once the scene had cleared, Belton’s family members and loved ones began to assemble a vigil on the sidewalk where he was attacked.

Police are seeking the public’s help. If you saw or heard anything unusual or suspicious in the area around that time, you are urged to contact the New Haven Police Department.
