NEW LONDON —  A New London man is accused of leading police on a high speed chase while a woman passenger tried to escape the car Monday afternoon and now he’s facing several charges.

Around 4:30 p.m. multiple callers reported a car traveling erratically in the area of Ocean Avenue near Toby May Field, police said. Callers said the driver was involved in a fight with a woman passenger who tried to escape but was pulled back into the car by the driver.

Officers stopped the car at Montauk Avenue and School Street. While officers walked up to the car, the woman tried to get out, but the driver hit the gas forcing her back inside, police said.

Police said they chased the car on Montauk Avenue to Glenwood Avenue as it hit two cars in the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Glenwood Avenue. No injuries were reported.

The driver continued on Glenwood Avenue and into the Waterford where he stopped the car on Dimmock Road near Goundry Drive and was taken into custody.

Police arrested Kevin Smith, 32, of New London. Smith was charged with breach of peace, unlawful restraint, reckless endangerment, DUI, reckless driving, engaging an officer in pursuit, evading responsibility, and operating without a license.

Smith was held on $100,000 bond.
