TARRYTOWN, N.Y.--Team USA is getting ready, and with time running out they're looking better than ever.
That's right: the women's basketball team, helmed by Connecticut's own Geno Auriemma, is practicing for its last few exhibition games before heading off to Rio.
Next up the team will play Team Canada at the Webster's Bank Arena in Bridgeport.
"We have a lot of UConn connections, but it's funny because I've never played with any of them at UConn...it's cool to learn from them and just see what they did at UConn an d now what they're continuing to do," said Breanna Stewart, the star of the UConn women's basketball team for the last four years who recently graduated and was drafted first in the WNBA for the Seatlle Storm.
They were training in Tarrytown, New York, at the Liberty and Knicks training facility before the Canada game on Friday.
Meanwhile, Auriemma reflected on his legacy in Connecticut, and how it's transferring to the Olympic stage this year.
"I think back to the last 20 years in college basketball, and you think about the absolute biggest names who have had the biggest impact in all of college basketball, and most of them came through Connecticut," he said on Thursday. Several team members went to UConn, including Breanna Stewart ('16), Sue Bird ('02), Tina Charles ('10), Maya Moore ('11) and Diana Taurasi ('04).
