MIDDLETOWN--The American Legion State baseball tournament got underway Friday night at Palmer field in Middletown, with game one of the three-game series between Stamford and RCP.

RCP grab a quick 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but the excitement was far from over.

In the bottom of the fifth Stamford would take a 2-1 lead off a ground ball to second by Shawn Urbano.

In the top of the eighth, with the game again tied at 2-2, Trevor Whalen sent a high fly ball to left field the ball, which was caught, but it gave Corey Baldwin plenty of time to tag up at third and give RCP the lead 3-2. Then in the bottom of the inning Stamford again would tie the game when Pete Horn would blister a hit into the outfield, which would drive home Telly Colarossi.

So in the top of the ninth RCP took the lead back one more time when Noah Budzik hit a ground ball to third and Roland Thivierge crossed home plate.

But the drama still wasn’t over! At the bottom of the ninth, with two outs, RCP led 5-4, and Stamford had a runner at third. Johnny Spoto got good contact to send the ball deep in the outfield, and then Thivierge came out of nowhere to make a catch and end the game.

RCP won 5-4 and has a chance to take the title Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
