Morning apartment building fire leads to rescues, injuries in Hartford

HARTFORD -- Three people were hospitalized after a large fire ignited in an apartment in the Asylum Hill section of Hartford.

Firefighters say they received 911 calls from 31 Gillett Street, at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters to the Asylum Village Apartments, a 64 unit apartment building, burning from the inside.

On arrival, firefighters say several people were hanging out of their windows to get fresh air because the smoke was so thick. Responding companies performed several rescues from windows via ground ladders and interior stairwells.

Three people were transported by ambulance to Hartford area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. No firefighter injuries were reported.

Firefighters say the battle was difficult due to the heavy rainfalls Sunday morning. Firefighters had to attack the blaze from the brick building's interior.

Officials on scene stressed the importance of renters insurance, as numerous families must now be relocated due to the extensive smoke and fire damage.

Hartford Fire Department captains and the Fire Marshal are handling the investigation.

No cause has been determined yet.
