DANBURY — A police officer was physically assaulted by a Danbury man late Saturday evening.

Officers received a 911 call shortly after 11 p.m. reporting that a man was viciously assaulting a Danbury Police Officer on Germantown road. Police identified the man as Pierre Elhayek, 20, of Danbury.

Officer Joe Pooler was parked in the lot of Jimmy’s Market, 38 Germantown Road, in his cruiser when he observed Elhayek pacing up and down the road two or three times.

Elhayek then approached the vehicle and began banging and kicking. The officer  exited his cruiser, believing the Elhayek was trying to get his attention for help.

Elhayek then immediately attacked Officer Pooler, striking him on the side of the head and ear.

A violent struggle ensued with Elhayek punching and kicking the officer in the head and body numerous times. During the struggle, Officer Pooler lost his Taser and was unable to get to his portable radio for help. He was able to get back inside his cruiser and then radioed for assistance, all while Elhayek continued to kick and back on the cruiser.

Several backup officers quickly arrived and were able to take Elhayek into custody after a brief struggle.

Officer Pooler was treated and released from Danbury Hospital.

Pierre Elhayek was charged with assault on a police officer, interfering with a police officer, and breach of peace and is being held on a $250,000 bond.
