MILFORD–Three beach areas are closed to swimming due to increased bacteria levels.

According to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the weekly samples taken at all state parks and beaches indicated there was an increased bacteria level at three state parks, and therefore the swimming areas are closed until bacteria levels recede.

The beaches include Silver Sands State Park in Milford, Day Pond State Park in Colchester and Wharton Beach State Park in North Haven.

DEEP resampled the beaches on Wednesday, but the tests did not show enough of a bacteria reduction for swimming to reopen. The state Department of Public Health tests the water samples that DEEP collects.

The beaches themselves are still open, you just can’t go in the water.

It’s unclear when the beaches will reopen.
