VERNON – Vernon police busted an 18-year-old sitting in his car in a park after hours, with drugs and a fake handgun in the car with him.

On Tuesday night, just before midnight, police said they were patrolling Henry Park, and saw a couple in a parked car, even though Henry Park is closed at sunset.

Police said Zachary Oliver, 18, of Willimantic, and an 18-year-old woman were involved in illegal drug activity in the parking lot.

Vernon Police K9 Officer Jeffrey Condon and his work dog partner, K9 Tengo, were called to the scene and Tengo found around a quarter pound of marijuana inside the car, as well as 70 illegal prescription pills, a digital scale and a fake handgun, according to police.

Oliver was arrested and charged with possession of more than 4 ounces of marijuana, two counts of possession of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, having a weapon in a motor vehicle, and a town ordinance violation.

Oliver was released on a non-surety bond and is scheduled to be arraigned at Rockville Superior Court on Tuesday, August 16 at 10 a.m.
