ENFIELD – Swimming is not recommended at the Scantic River in Enfield after high levels of E.coli were detected, according to river association said.
Water quality test results of the Scantic River on Wednesday showed very elevated levels of E.coli, so any activity in the water is not recommended.
Powder Hollow is currently four times higher than last week’s test results with the number of viable bacterial cells at 1299.7 per 100ml. Swimming is not recommended once this number exceeds 235 per 100ml.
Bacteria levels are typically elevated during and shortly after wet weather events, and good precautions to take include:
- Avoid swimming right after a heavy rain
- Avoid contact with the river downstream of a sewage outfall
- Cover open cuts/use ear and nose plugs
