SHELTON – A Shelton man was arrested on Tuesday for driving under the influence, police said.

Just after midnight, State police received calls for a wrong way driver on Route 8. Officers caught up with Walter Ciepiela, 64, near Exit 12.

Ciepiela refused to pull over, police said, so multiple troopers began coordinating an effort to stop him.

That’s when, police said, in an attempt to escape police, Ciepiela avoided stop sticks and almost struck a cruiser. Police managed to stop the car after deploying stop sticks a second time, striking both driver side tires.

Ciepiela did not resist arrest.

Police said Ciepiela’s eyes were bloodshot and glossy, his words were slurred and was in possession of marijuana.

Ciepiela failed the Sobriety tests.

He was arrested on numerous charges including criminal attempt/assault on a police officer, reckless endangerment and driving under the influence.

Ciepiela did not post his $50,000 bond and is set to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court in on Tuesday.
