LITCHFIELD — A former Waterbury judicial marshal was sentenced to serve one year in prison on several sex-related charges that included promoting prostitution, sexual assault and trafficking in persons.

Fifty-four-year-old Michael Connelly pleaded guilty under the Alford doctrine in Litchfield Superior Court in May. The plea means that Connelly didn’t admit his guilt but conceded that the prosecution had enough evidence to convict him.

Connelly was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in prison with the term suspended after one year. He will be placed in protective custody because of his work as a judicial marshal.

A seven-month probe into Connelly found that he posed as a police official to coerce three prostitutes into sex under the threat of arrest.

Judge John Danaher III said Connelly brought dishonor to the judicial marshal service.
