HARTFORD -- If you're thinking about taking a dip at a public pool in Hartford to cool off, look elsewhere because they've been closed and drained for the season.

Hartford city officials say the pools have closed, which is normal around this time of year. The reason? The upcoming beginning of the school year and lifeguards, who are usually college-aged, returning back to their schools.

City splash pads will remain open for a little while longer, but hours may vary.

Although the heat wave has ended for now, city emergency management officials are reminding residents to take any excessive heat seriously and recognize the signs of dehydration and/or heat stroke.

"Just stay hydrated," said Chief Reginald Freeman of the Hartford Fire Department. "Drink as much water as often as possible, stay indoors, in cool or shaded areas."

Another option is to visit the city's recreation centers. "They're very comfortable and they have everything you need to make sure you're not exposed to the dangerous temperatures we're experiencing and it also gives our youth an opportunity to exercise safely," said Freeman.
